Martin originally planned to become a geologist, but became distracted by archaeology and ended up at the University of Bradford studying archaeological science. There the geophysical influence of Arnold Aspinall was inspiring and he completed the Masters in Archaeological Prospection, conveniently solving the archaeology versus geology career problem.

Since 1997 he has worked continuously in near surface geophysics, was elected a GeolSoc Fellow in 2009 and has now embarked upon the process to become a Chartered Geologist. He is a Platinum member of the European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE), a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) and has served on the EuroGPR and CIfA GeoSIG committees. He is also a founding member of COST Action SAGA and and is the joint UK representative within its Management Committee.

In between managing and conducting geophysical surveys across the UK and Ireland, Martin has reviewed academic papers for the 10th and 11th ICAP conferences, the EAGE conference and material for ArcLand and several other technical publications since then. He has also proof-read many technical papers and other publications, including parts of Federica Boschi's Erasmus IP Summer School "Preventative Archaeology" and was the technical editor for Michael Burianyk's "Understanding Signals" SEG publication.

Martin was for some years a Sessional Lecturer for Archaeological Geophysics at Birkbeck College, completely rebuilding the course into a hugely popular module. Since then he has maintained an active interest in the provision of technical training and is currently engaged in developing a new specialist geophysical team and infrastructure in the southern Balkans.

When not doing these other things Martin may be found in the workshop, from which various systems have emerged over the years in support of geophysical data acquisition and processing, GNSS tracking and real-time visualisation, combining practical, C++ and embedded systems skills. If not in the workshop, then he will be gardening, playing tabla or dreaming of better weather.
